About us
When the company founder Hermann Schulz registered an enterprise for galvanic metal coating at the first production site in Hamburg-Altona on 20 July 1948, he could not foresee that the company would grow to a modern hard chrome plating company with almost 8,000 m² of production space and over 60 employees just about 60 years later.
At the beginning, the company focused on conventional electroplating. All standard metal coatings were offered together with their perimeter application fields. Soon the company expanded its mechanical production section in addition to hard chrome plating. This made it possible to offer the constantly rising number of customers complete solutions for ground and hard chrome plated rollers and pistons in the entire hydraulics sector.
First company site around 1948 in Hamburg-Altona
When the company relocated in 1972 to Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, the founder's son Harald Schulz joined the company and took over the technical management of the electroplating department, which was subsequently expanded with six large electroplating machines.
The mechanical production section, specially designed for the mass production of piston rods, was expanded as of 1986 and takes up half of the total production capacities today. A machine for hard chrome plating of piston rods was installed at the same time and continuously expanded.
Besides the complete production of individual and serial parts including hard chrome plating, the company nowadays offers automated galvanic zinc and zinc alloy coating with the corresponding passivation steps and top coats for the automobile industry and regional machine construction.
After the founder left the company last year, the so far individual enterprise was reorganised in 2004. The two companies Schulz Metallveredelung GmbH and Schulz Hartchrom GmbH were founded. Harald and Stephan Schulz were the managing directors.
In 2006, Stephan Schulz took over sole management and now heads the companies in the third generation
Capacity expansion for piston rods

Present company in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld
In late summer of 2007, the management decided to expand the existing production sections for 6 m long, hard chrome plated piston rods and pipes by more than 30 %.
As a consequence, the existing hard chrome plating facility, the mechanical pre and end finish section (belt grinding) as well as the storage areas had to be expanded and converted as well.
The first step, the expansion of the hard chrome plating machine facilities, was realised in January 2008.
An optimisation and expansion concept was developed with the companies LPW- Anlagen GmbH & Co. KG, Neuss and Enthone GmbH, Langenfeld, as well as with our own employees.
This called for an additional bath volume of 25,000 litres to achieve a total volume of 80,000 litres in order to realise the desired capacity expansion.
Extended hard chrome plating machine
Nowadays, over 140,000 litres of hard chrome electrolytes are in application.
After successful commissioning of the extended hard chrome plating machines in April 2008, the second construction stage in the existing electroplating section was also realised in April.
Previously, two large electroplating machines, which had served for barrel galvanizing and rack phosphating for decades, were removed to create space for new storage areas and the final processing of piston rods.
The partial dismantling and new construction of 800 m² of hall was completed at the end of August 2008 after a four-month construction period.
A new belt grinder manufactured by Löser GmbH, Speyer, was installed in the new production and storage hall in September 2008. It ensures the optimum and state-of-the-art end finish of hard chrome plated pistons and pipes in standard lengths.

As a result of this expansion, we are now the leading manufacturer for the complete production of hard chrome plated piston rods and pipes with over 800,000 metres per year.
To round off the conversion work, which took over one year, and the 60th company anniversary, a large company party was celebrated with the employees and long-standing customers and suppliers.
